If you delve deeper into this issue, you will see that there is good reason for the confusion. However, if you just want to know what is right, the matter is very simple:<span style=\"color: #0099ff;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #0099ff;\">It&#8217;s<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s<\/strong> is short for <strong>it is<\/strong> or <strong>it has<\/strong>. This is a 100% rule. It cannot be used for anything else. If you cannot expand <i>it&#8217;s<\/i> to <i>it is<\/i> or <i>it has<\/i>, then it is wrong.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #0099ff;\">Its<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><strong><b>Its<\/b> is the possessive form of <b>it<\/b>.<br \/>\nIts <\/strong>is like his and her.<\/p>\n<p><i>His<\/i> is used for a masculine possessor (owner). (These are <i>his<\/i> pies.)<br \/>\n<i>Her<\/i> is used for feminine possessor. (These are <i>her<\/i> flowers.)<br \/>\n<i>Its<\/i> is used for neuter possessor. (These are <i>its<\/i> footprints.)<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0099ff;\"><strong>Correct<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s been raining for a week, and now it&#8217;s starting to snow. (<b>It has<\/b> been raining for a week, and now <b>it is<\/b> starting to snow)<\/li>\n<li>I think the company wants to have its cake and eat it. (its \u2013 possessive form. This is correct.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0099ff;\">Incorrect<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s one of the hardest courses in it&#8217;s history. (The first <b>it&#8217;s<\/b> is correct. The second should be <b>its<\/b>.)<\/li>\n<li>The reef shark chases it&#8217;s prey through the coral. (should be <b>its<\/b>, i.e., the possessive form.
