There is often confusion between its<\/b> and it’s<\/b>. If you delve deeper into this issue, you will see that there is good reason for the confusion. However, if you just want to know what is right, the matter is very simple:

It’s<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n

It’s<\/strong> is short for it is<\/strong> or it has<\/strong>. This is a 100% rule. It cannot be used for anything else. If you cannot expand it’s<\/i> to it is<\/i> or it has<\/i>, then it is wrong.<\/p>\n

Its<\/span><\/h5>\n

Its<\/b> is the possessive form of it<\/b>.
\nIts <\/strong>is like his and her.<\/p>\n

His<\/i> is used for a masculine possessor (owner). (These are his<\/i> pies.)
\nHer<\/i> is used for feminine possessor. (These are her<\/i> flowers.)
\nIts<\/i> is used for neuter possessor. (These are its<\/i> footprints.)<\/p>\n

Correct<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

  • It’s been raining for a week, and now it’s starting to snow. (It has<\/b> been raining for a week, and now it is<\/b> starting to snow)<\/li>\n
  • I think the company wants to have its cake and eat it. (its \u2013 possessive form. This is correct.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Incorrect<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    • It’s one of the hardest courses in it’s history. (The first it’s<\/b> is correct. The second should be its<\/b>.)<\/li>\n
    • The reef shark chases it’s prey through the coral. (should be its<\/b>, i.e., the possessive form. You cannot expand this to it is<\/i> or it has<\/i>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      Tip<\/span><\/h5>\n

      If You can’t expand your IT’S<\/strong> to IT IS<\/strong> or IT HAS<\/strong>, then you should be using ITS.<\/strong><\/p>\n
