For the one-syllable<\/strong><strong> words ending in single vowel + single consonant, double the consonant before a suffix beginning with vowel.<br \/>\n<\/strong>(*Syllable meaning : a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or a part of a word; for example, there are two syllables in <i>water<\/i> and three in <i>inferno<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 beg + ed = begged<br \/>\n\u2022 run + ed =running<br \/>\n\u2022 rob + er = robber<br \/>\n\u2022 sad + est =saddest<\/p>\n<p>but\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 wish + ed = wished (two consonants)<br \/>\n\u2022 fear + ing = fearing ( two vowels)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. For the words of two or three syllables ending in single vowel + single consonant, double the final consonant if the last syllable is stressed. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Begin + ing =beginning<br \/>\n\u2022 Permit +ed =permitted<br \/>\n\u2022 Occur +ed =occurred<br \/>\n\u2022 Control + er =controller<\/p>\n<p>There are more Spelling Rules that follow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. The consonant is not doubled if the last syllable is not stressed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Benefit +ed = benefited<br \/>\n\u2022 Suffer + ing =suffering<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Worship +ed =worshipped<br \/>\n\u2022 Handicap +ed =handicapped<br \/>\n\u2022 Kidnap +er =kidnapper<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. The consonant \u2018l\u2019 is doubled, even if the stress does not fall on the last syllable. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Quarrel + ed =quarreled<br \/>\n\u2022 Signal + ing = signalling<br \/>\n\u2022 Travel + er =traveller<br \/>\n\u2022 Distil + er =distiller<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. If the word to which suffix \u2018ful\u2019 is added ends in\u2018ll\u2019, the second \u2018l\u2019 is dropped. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Skill + ful =skilful<br \/>\n\u2022 Will + full =willful<\/p>\n<p>There are more Spelling Rules that follow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. For words ending in silent \u2018e\u2019, drop the \u2018e\u2019 before a suffix beginning with a vowel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Live + ing =living<br \/>\n\u2022 Move + ing =moving<br \/>\n\u2022 Drive + ing =driving<br \/>\n\u2022 Hope + ing =hoping<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0099ff;\">NOTE:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u2018e\u2019 remains before a suffix beginning with a consonant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Hope + ful =hopeful<br \/>\n\u2022 Engage +ment =engagement<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 True + ly +truly<br \/>\n\u2022 Whole +ly =wholly<br \/>\n\u2022 Due + ly = duly<br \/>\n\u2022 Nine + th =ninth<br \/>\n\u2022 Awe + ful =awful<br \/>\n\u2022 Argue +ment =argument<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Notice the special case of words ending in \u2018ce\u2019 and \u2018ge\u2019 which keep the \u2018e\u2019 when adding \u2018able\u2019 and \u2018ous\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Notice +able =noticeable<br \/>\n\u2022 Peace +able =peaceful<br \/>\n\u2022 Change +able =changeable<br \/>\n\u2022 Courage + ous =courageous<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Words ending in \u2018ee\u2019 do not drop an \u2018e\u2019 before a suffix. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 See + ing =seeing<br \/>\n\u2022 Agree + ment =agreement<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Words ending in \u2018ie\u2019 change the \u2018ie\u2019 to \u2018y\u2019 when \u2018ing\u2019 is added.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Die + ing =dying<br \/>\n\u2022 Tie + ing =tying<br \/>\n\u2022 Lie + ing =lying<\/p>\n<p>There are more Spelling Rules that follow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. A final \u2018y\u2019 following a consonant changes to \u2018i\u2019 before a suffix except \u2018ing\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Happy + ly = happily<br \/>\n\u2022 Beauty + ful =beautiful<br \/>\n\u2022 Carry + ed = carried<br \/>\n\u2022 Marry + ed =married<br \/>\n\u2022 Marry +age =marriage<br \/>\n\u2022 Carry +ing =carrying<br \/>\n\u2022 Marry +ing =marrying<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0099ff;\">NOTE:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But, \u2018y\u2019 following a vowel does not change.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Pray + ed =prayed<br \/>\n\u2022 Play +er =player<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Pay +ed =paid<br \/>\n\u2022 Say +ed =said<br \/>\n\u2022 Lay + ed =laid<br \/>\n\u2022 Day + ly =daily<br \/>\n\u2022 Gay +ly =gaily<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. When \u2018ie\u2019 or \u2018ei\u2019 is pronounced like \u2018ee\u2019 in jeep, \u2018i\u2019 comes before \u2018e\u2019 except after \u2018c\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Believe<br \/>\n\u2022 Relieve<br \/>\n\u2022 Achieve<br \/>\n\u2022 Grieve<br \/>\n\u2022 Yield<br \/>\n\u2022 Field<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Receive<br \/>\n\u2022 Receipt<br \/>\n\u2022 Deceive<br \/>\n\u2022 Deceit<br \/>\n\u2022 Conceive<br \/>\n\u2022 Conceit<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Seize<br \/>\n\u2022 Weird<br \/>\n\u2022 Protein<br \/>\n\u2022 Surfeit<br \/>\n\u2022 Counterfeit<br \/>\n\u2022 Plebeian<\/p>\n<p>These are the Spelling Rules which determine the formation of words of different kinds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spelling Rules There are few Spelling Rules which should be followed in the formation of words. 1.
