Danielle Steel\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0wildly popular novels have made her a household name, and as the founder of the Nick Traina Foundation\u2014so called after her late son\u2014the mother of nine is also an ardent advocate for mental-health awareness. Ahead of her new book,\u00a0Fairytale,<\/em>\u00a0being published next month, take a look at where Steel\u2019s best-sellers are brought to life, at her desk in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

My beloved, partially handmade 1946 Olympia standard typewriter. I\u2019ve written 163 books on this typewriter, and it\u2019s still going strong.<\/p>\n

I love these mementos that my children have given me for good luck. They touch my heart but do not help my creative process. The desktop is so crowded that, when I\u2019m writing, I have to take them off the desk until I finish the book.<\/p>\n

This tall stack of papers is all pending projects.<\/p>\n

On the walls of my office are framed covers of my books and sayings that I love. One favorite, since I work very late: \u201cWhat hath night to do with sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n

This magnet says, \u201c#1 Mom,\u201d and was a Mother\u2019s Day gift.<\/p>\n
