But did you know that a lot of common words are also formed by subtraction or taking a piece away from a longer word?<span id=\"more-52\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The linguistic term for this is clipping. It means shortening an existing word to form a new word. The clipped form has the same meaning as the original word and becomes a word in its own right, rather than an abbreviation. This means it can be combined with other words to form compounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some examples of clipped forms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>biopic<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 biographical picture<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #0088ff;\">bra<\/span> <\/strong>-brassi\u00e8re<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>burger<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 hamburger<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>bus<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 omnibus<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>cello<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 violoncello<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>exam<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 examination<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>flu<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 influenza<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>fridge<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 refrigerator<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>gas <\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 gasoline<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>gym<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 gymnasium<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>lab<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 laboratory<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>math<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 mathematics (clipped to maths in British English)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>memo<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 memorandum<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>mob<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 mobile vulgus (fickle crowd in Latin)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>movie<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 moving picture<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>pants<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 pantaloons<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>phone<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 telephone<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>piano<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 pianoforte<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>plane<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 airplane<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>pram<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 perambulator<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>sitcom <\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 situation comedy<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>tie<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 necktie<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0088ff;\"><strong>typo<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 typographical error<\/p>\n<p>There are lots more, of course, but these are clipped forms that have more or less replaced the longer original in everyday speech.
