French Class
– Sachin Jalan
Book Synopsis
The story begins with the central character narrating a series of events that happened during his graduation. Towards the end of the narration and particularly after a trip to his previous college, there’s a significant change in his thoughts and he is better able to connect the dots. It was his third year of engineering and he was still untouched by the feeling of love. He had heard people say that it is the most powerful force in the world, it either makes you or destroys you, but he didn’t believe them. Not until he met Gauri Vats in French class. Them opting for French as their foreign language was an event of fate in itself. Smitten by the love bug, there was nothing he wouldn’t do to get his love story started, beginning with approaching the beautiful girl; something he feared more than death. He would pray day and night for her to start loving him but he couldn’t get out of the dreadful friend zone. What followed was a roller coaster ride of fights and make ups and him ending up promising to marry a girl he had met online. But after coming to terms with the facts towards the end of his course, he realized that Gauri was a milestone in his journey of trying to understand love, and not his destination. The story ends with a message that love is not something one has to work for; it has always been there since our beginning. We just have to acknowledge it and submit ourselves to the most powerful force in the world.
